Population & Housing Census
 
The population and housing census is considered  one of the most important sources of population statistics for it provides a materialized picture of demographic, social and economic realities of the population.
CDSI, the agency in charge of census taking by virtue of the General Population Census Law issued by the Royal Decree No. m/13 dated 23/4/1391 H., has conducted the 1413 (1992) Population & Housing Census and the 1425H.  (2004) Population & Housing Census and is currently planning for conducting the 1431H. Population & Housing Census.
The population & housing census is intended to collect, compile and disseminate demographic, social and economic information about the population. This information is used to meet state requirements and the needs of planners and researchers from basic population data. The population & housing census  also provides a recent frame for all specialized statistical surveys that are carried out on a sample basis. Moreover, The population & housing census provides the basic foundation for a broad data-base that can be used as a reliable source in carrying out studies and researches required for economic, social and administrative development programs.
 
A.  Method of Population & Housing Census Taking in the Kingdom:
 
The population & housing census in the Kingdom is carried out on a de- facto basis, that is, individuals are enumerated at places where they are at census time, regardless of being usual residents of such places or temporarily visiting.
 
B. Census Time Reference:
 
  • Basic characteristics of all household members related to their number, age, nationality, educational status, marital status refer to the mid-night of census date. The enumeration period lasts for the 15 days following the census night.
  • Economic data on activity status of individuals, employment status, occupation and economic activity of employed individuals refer to the week preceding the census.
  • Data on births and deaths refer to the 12 months preceding the census night.
 
C. Publications of Population & Housing Census:
 
CDSI published the detailed results of the 1413H. (1992) and the 1425H. (2004) Population & Housing Censuses in 14 bulletins, one for the Kingdom as a whole and one for each of the 13 administrative areas of the Kingdom. Such bulletins were disseminated to concerned users. In addition, additional data not included in census bulletins, were produced from census data base and made available to users on request.
